Home generators in the Village of Lake Deaton

Lake Deaton wraps the north and west shores of its lake, with 2013 and 2014 block and stucco designer homes, some with private pools. A licensed local installer fits a generator to your lakefront or preserve lot and to the people inside.

Lake Deaton is named for its water. The village sits on the north and west sides of Lake Deaton, south of Hillsborough Trail, about 1.4 miles straight-line east of Brownwood Paddock Square. Listings show lake frontage, pond views on Neighborly Way, a preserve view with no rear neighbors on Wine Palm Way, and cul-de-sac lots. Recent listings show lots of about 0.14 to 0.26 acre.

Each setting changes the generator conversation. On a lakefront or pond lot, the rear yard faces open water and homes across it. The District 10 manual requires the exhaust to point away from neighboring properties, so your installer considers the shoreline curve before setting the unit. A preserve lot with no rear neighbors makes the exhaust rule easier, but people on paths and the view itself still argue for a unit tucked close to the house.

Water also means thinking about ground. Your installer checks where stormwater drains on your lot and keeps the pad off the low spot, since the manual asks for a pad no larger than necessary and you do not want to raise a large one. Cul-de-sac lots vary in shape, so your installer measures each rear corner against the 2 foot rule and the street view.

Sizing the yard also means sizing the house. Some Lake Deaton designer homes, Gardenia, Zinnia and Sunflower models among them, have private pools, and a pool pump is a load to manage. See placement and noise and the sizing guide.

Oxygen, CPAP and a cool bedroom for Lake Deaton households

A generator in Lake Deaton is often a health decision. HHS emPOWER data for October 2026 shows 2,478 Sumter County Medicare beneficiaries who rely on power-dependent equipment, 577 of them on oxygen. Many households moved in when these homes were new in 2013 and 2014, and an oxygen concentrator or CPAP may have arrived since then.

Here is what matters when the power goes out:

  • Overnight starts. Most portable concentrators last only about 3 to 4 hours on battery at low settings, per CDC researchers. A standby generator restores power on its own, so the battery is only a bridge.
  • Small loads, big stakes. A Philips EverFlo home concentrator, for example, averages about 350 watts. A CPAP and a medication refrigerator add little. Even a modest generator covers them; the question is AC.
  • Heat. The CDC says adults 65 and older adjust less well to sudden heat and should not rely on a fan as the main cooling in very hot weather.
  • Medicine. FDA says refrigerated insulin can be kept between 59 F and 86 F for up to 28 days; Ready.gov says discard other refrigerated medicine after more than a day without power unless the label says otherwise.

Register with the Sumter County special needs registry, run by the Florida Department of Health in Sumter County, knowing it does not guarantee a shelter space. And note that SECO Energy's Medically Necessary Service gives no priority during named-storm restoration. More on backup power for medical equipment.

Your approval path

Leave it to chance, and a lake view comes with a hot house, a warming freezer and an oxygen battery counting down.

  1. Follow the District 10 manual

The August 2026 District 10 manual requires an ARC application for a permanently affixed generator: rear or side yard, at least 2 feet off property lines, not visible from the street, exhaust away from neighbors.

  2. Plan the pad and fuel

The site plan shows property lines, easements and a pad no larger than necessary, with screening no taller than the unit. An above-ground propane tank needs approval and is limited to one tank of 120 gallons or less.

  3. Sumter County permits

Your installer files the electrical and any gas permit with Sumter County Building Services (verify by address).

  4. Install and inspection

The generator, transfer switch and fuel line go in, the county inspects, and you see a full test run before the installer leaves.

Fuel for a 2014 block and stucco home on Lake Deaton

Most Lake Deaton homes are block and stucco designer homes from 2014, with a 2013 home on New Moon Avenue in stucco and vinyl. That solid construction makes the install itself simple. The bigger question is fuel.

Natural gas. TECO Peoples Gas is the main gas utility in The Villages, but its mains are not mapped village by village, so check for a gas meter or a Peoples bill. A Generac 26 kW unit uses about 188 cubic feet an hour at half load and 333 at full load. Peoples asks installers to report new standby generators and checks the meter and regulator. In its May 2025 statement it said its underground system is typically resilient in severe weather.

Propane. The District 10 manual permits both underground and above-ground tanks. Above ground, it is one tank of no more than 120 gallons with ARC approval, hidden from the road and neighbors and out of easements. That gives 96 usable gallons, about 47 hours at half load on a 26 kW unit. On a 22 or 24 kW Generac, which burns 2.53 gallons an hour at half load, the same tank gives about 38 hours.

For longer runs, a buried tank is the usual answer: about 4.0 days from 250 gallons and 8.1 days from 500 at half load. On lots of 0.14 to 0.26 acre, the NFPA 58 setback of about 10 feet from the house and any buildable property line, plus easements and the shoreline, decide whether one fits. See propane tank limits and natural gas here.

Lake Deaton Recreation, Burnsed across the water and Brownwood nearby

Lake Deaton life centers on its neighborhood pool. Lake Deaton Recreation at 3571 Warnock Road has an adult pool, bocce, fishing, horseshoes and shuffleboard. Burnsed Recreation, a village center at 4019 Deskin Lane, sits on the far side of the lake, officially in the Village of Osceola Hills at Lake Deaton. Evans Prairie championship golf and the Hendry Drive executive courses are just north, and Brownwood Paddock Square is a short trip west.

Those places run on the same grid as your home. When recreation centers reopen after a storm is a District decision, and the District does not publish what backup power they carry. A plan for your household should work even if they stay closed for days.

That plan is ordinary when it works. The freezer that FDA says holds about 48 hours when full keeps holding. The AC keeps the bedroom cool for sleep. Phones charge, the garage door opens, the coffee maker runs. Water service comes from Central Sumter Utility, the District system for most of Districts 9, 10 and 11; if the District issues a precautionary boil water notice, a working stove lets you boil water for one minute as directed.

A home with power also helps the street. Neighbors who lost theirs can charge a phone or cool off for an hour. When Lake Deaton Recreation opens again, you walk over rested. Read the long-outage guide and keeping the AC on.

Can I put a generator behind my lakefront home in Lake Deaton?

Usually, if the spot is in the rear or side yard, at least 2 feet from property lines and out of view from the street, as the District 10 manual requires. The exhaust must point away from neighboring properties, which matters on a curved shoreline. Your installer also checks drainage so the pad stays off any low ground near the water.

Will a generator run my pool pump and AC?

It can, if it is sized for them. Many Lake Deaton designer homes have private pools, and the pump plus a central AC compressor are the big loads. A 22 to 26 kW unit with load management can run both, shedding the pool pump when the AC starts. Your installer reads the nameplates and recommends a size and load plan.

Does SECO give priority to oxygen users after a hurricane?

No. SECO Energy's Medically Necessary Service flags an account for crews only when emergency storm restoration is not in effect, and it gives no priority during named-storm restoration. That is why Lake Deaton households with oxygen plan their own backup power and also register with the Sumter County special needs registry.

How long will a 120-gallon tank run my Lake Deaton generator?

About 47 hours for a Generac 26 kW unit at half load, and about 38 hours for a 22 or 24 kW Generac, per their spec sheets. The tank is filled to 80%, so it holds 96 gallons. The District 10 manual allows one above-ground tank of that size with approval. Natural gas, or a larger buried tank where setbacks allow, lasts longer.

Who issues the generator permit in Lake Deaton?

Lake Deaton is in District 10, in unincorporated Sumter County, so permits normally come from Sumter County Building Services in Wildwood. Your installer confirms the office for your address and files the electrical permit, plus a gas permit with tank size, pipe size and length, BTUs and a site plan where fuel piping is involved.
