Planning a generator in Merritt Field

Merritt Field is so new that its recreation center is still on the horizon. If you are buying or just moved in, this is the best moment to plan a standby generator, and here is what is and is not known yet.

Merritt Field is the newest village with finished homes. The Villages introduced it April 1, 2026, then released designer homesites July 29, cottage homes September 2, cottage villas September 24, Patrick Villas October 6, the Merritt Field Verandas (Maybury and Mason models) October 8 and Ashlynn Villas October 21, 2026. It sits south of Central Parkway between Busche Boulevard and McNeill Drive, east of Long Prairie and south of Farmstead.

What is known and what is not:

  • Finished homes are confirmed only by photos on new listings, such as one on Regina Court ordered March 18, 2026. There are no resales yet.
  • Construction. Most current listings are cottage homes and villas. The Regina Court photo shows white vinyl lap siding and an asphalt-shingle hip roof with no gutters. Verandas and designer homes in nearby villages use precast concrete walls, but each Merritt Field model should be checked.
  • Merritt Field Recreation, a planned neighborhood pool with a postal facility, is still listed as on the horizon.
  • Natural gas has not been confirmed.

Listing photos show open graded land with active construction next door. That is the best time to plan: before landscaping, irrigation and screening go in, your installer can mark where the pad and tank belong. See how it works.

Oxygen, heat and a first hurricane season for Merritt Field households

Many people moving to Merritt Field arrive with a medical routine already in place. In Sumter County, HHS emPOWER counts 2,478 Medicare members on power-dependent equipment as of October 2026, and 577 receive oxygen services. The Regina Court listing carries ZIP 32162, where 1,101 members rely on power-dependent devices.

A new home needs a new medical plan:

  • Register, but do not rely on it. The Department of Health handles Sumter County's special needs list through the state registry site. Registration does not guarantee a shelter space, and the state asks people to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours.
  • Know your utility's limits. SECO's medically necessary flag stops counting once a named storm's restoration starts. Duke Energy Florida has its own program; check which utility is on your bill.
  • Treat heat as a health risk. The CDC says adults 65 and older are more prone to heat illness and should not rely on a fan as the main cooling source in very hot weather.

The core medical load is small. A Philips EverFlo concentrator averages about 350 watts, and a refrigerator runs about 750 watts with a start about three times that. Add one cooling zone and you have a plan a right-sized generator can carry for days. Talk to your provider about backup supplies too, and see powering medical equipment.

Put oxygen and cooling at the top of your Merritt Field plan.

Your approval path

Graded land fills in quickly; wait a season and the pad, the buried tank and the screening may have nowhere left to go.

  1. Start with the home type

Merritt Field offers cottage homes, Seabreeze cottage villas, Patrick and Ashlynn patio villas, Merritt Field Verandas and designer homes. The developer manual's tank rule depends on which you own.

  2. Developer ARC application

Under the District 13 to 16 manual, a permanently affixed generator sits rear or side, out of street view, sized to the lot, out of easements and setbacks, with exhaust away from neighbors and any fence no taller than the unit.

  3. Buried or above-ground tank

Cottage homes, designer homes and patio villas need a buried propane tank. Seabreeze cottage villas and the Verandas may use one above-ground tank up to 120 gallons.

  4. County permit and inspection

Sumter County Building Services issues permits for the City of Wildwood. The installer files, builds to plan and books the inspection.

Merritt Field is in District 16, created February 24, 2025, and it uses the developer-administered ARC manual for Districts 13 to 16, Version 4.20.26. Portables are exempt; a permanently affixed generator needs an application.

Placement rules:

  • Rear or side of the home site, not visible from the street.
  • Size consistent with the size of the lot.
  • Not in any dominant or servient use easement; the manual's appendices diagram villa and veranda easements.
  • No vertical construction in developer, city or county setbacks.
  • Screening fence no taller than the generator; exhaust aimed away from neighbors.

Fuel rules by type:

  • Cottage homes (Anchor, Pebble Beach, Paradise Found), designer homes and patio villas (Patrick, Ashlynn and others): buried propane tank only, outside utility and use easements.
  • Seabreeze cottage villas and Merritt Field Verandas: a buried tank or one above-ground tank of up to 120 gallons, hidden from the road and neighbors.

A buried tank also has to meet NFPA 58; a fire marshal summary keeps it at least 10 feet from the building and a buildable property line. On a cottage lot that can be the deciding factor, so the installer checks it first. The manual states no 2 foot distance and does not address noise. Read the ARC approval guide.

Between Honeysuckle and the future Timberland course: open lots, open views

The Villages describes Merritt Field as nestled among the fairways of the Honeysuckle Executive course and the future Timberland Executive course. Nineteen current listings are golf-front, some cottage homes and verandas have preserve views, and Ashlynn Villas offer golf course or water views. Shallow Creek Championship, Bellaire Executive and the Central Lake Golf Academy are within reach.

Open land and golf frontage change the placement conversation:

  • Nothing hides the unit yet. With no mature trees, screening is a low fence no taller than the generator, or plants that will grow in.
  • The view is the rear. The manual's test is the street, but golf-front owners often choose a side yard to keep the course view clear.
  • Construction next door. Graded lots shift as neighbors build. A pad set on a surveyed spot, outside easements, avoids surprises.
  • Runtime on a small tank. A villa's 120 gallon above-ground tank runs a Generac 26 kW about 47 hours at half load. A buried 250 gallon tank on a home lot runs about 97 hours.

Merritt Field's recreation center is not open yet, and Olympia, Pullman (upcoming) and Mustang Recreation are the nearby options. None of them is an outage plan. A home that keeps running is. More on fuel and runtime.

Can I plan a generator before my Merritt Field home is finished?

Yes. An installer can review your home type and homesite plat, list your medical and cooling loads, and sketch where a pad and tank could go under the developer manual. The developer ARC application and Sumter County permit are filed once you own the home. Planning early keeps landscaping and other work out of that spot.

Does a Merritt Field cottage home need a buried propane tank?

Yes. The District 13 to 16 developer manual requires an underground propane tank for single-family homes, including cottage homes, and for patio villas such as the Patrick and Ashlynn Villas. Seabreeze cottage villas and the Merritt Field Verandas may use one above-ground tank of up to 120 gallons instead. NFPA 58 spacing still applies to a buried tank.

Is Merritt Field Recreation open?

Not yet. As of late October 2026 The Villages lists Merritt Field Recreation, a planned neighborhood pool with a postal facility, as on the horizon. Olympia and Mustang Recreation are nearby and Pullman Recreation is upcoming. None is a storm shelter; Sumter County's special needs shelter is at the Gloria Rowe Hayward complex in Sumterville.

What size generator does an oxygen user in Merritt Field need?

Often less than people expect. A Philips EverFlo oxygen concentrator averages about 350 watts, and a refrigerator runs about 750 watts with a start about three times that. Air conditioning is the largest load. Many cottage and villa households size for oxygen, the refrigerator and one cooling zone, with load management for the rest.

What does a whole-home generator cost in Merritt Field?

For a typical Florida whole-home install, PowerOutage.us lists about $7,000 to $15,000. A buried propane tank, the run to the meter and load management can change your number. The installer gives a written quote after the free in-home estimate, and there is no obligation to go ahead.
