Home generators for Long Prairie

Long Prairie's first homes closed in 2026 in the brand-new District 16. If you are moving in, the fuel rule for your home type decides most of your generator plan, so start there.

Long Prairie has more home styles than most new villages, and the District 13 to 16 developer manual ties the propane rule to the style. Here is how it sorts out:

  • Buried tank required: designer and premier homes and the Wallace patio villas, along with any other patio villa or cottage home. The tank goes underground, outside utility and use easements.
  • Buried or one above-ground tank up to 120 gallons: the Long Prairie Verandas (East, West and North, with Hudson, Hillsdale and Ottawa models), Sara courtyard villas and Long Prairie Cottage Villas. An above-ground tank must be hidden from the road and neighbors.
  • Ask the ARC: the manual's propane list does not name bungalow villas (Raleigh, Monroe, Charlotte, Arlington, Bristol) or garden villas, so confirm their rule before ordering a tank.

The tank sets your hours. Using a Generac 26 kW at half load, 2.06 gallons an hour, with tanks filled to about 80%: 120 gallons runs about 47 hours, a buried 250 gallons about 97 hours, a buried 500 gallons about 194 hours.

A buried tank needs space. A fire marshal summary of NFPA 58 keeps it at least 10 feet from the building and a buildable property line, and most current Long Prairie listings are interior sites backing to a wall.

Natural gas has not been mapped for District 16. The installer checks for service at the address. See propane tank limits.

Bungalow villas, Sara courtyards and verandas along Busche Boulevard

Long Prairie was introduced February 25, 2026, and it filled fast. Long Prairie Cottage Villas and Wallace Patio Villas released in June 2026, Verandas North in August, Sara Villas and Verandas West in September, and designer homesites in September 2026. The homefinder lists 289 Long Prairie homes, including 125 new homes with photos, and a resale on Long Prairie Path shows an original closing of August 10, 2026.

The construction mix matters for an install. Of those 125 new listings, 53 show precast concrete walls with a cement finish, the spec for verandas, designer and premier homes. Cottage homes, cottage villas and many patio villas are frame with vinyl siding. Both carry Landmark designer shingles where specs are published.

Placement notes for the common types:

  • Verandas and villas share walls and use easements that the developer manual diagrams in its appendices. A generator may not sit in one.
  • Interior sites that back to a wall usually leave a side yard as the only rear-or-side option out of street view.
  • Lot-sized units. The manual says the generator's size must be consistent with the lot, which favors right-sizing on smaller villa sites.

Your installer reads the plat, notes the wall type for the transfer switch and conduit route, and follows the manufacturer's clearances. Use the sizing guide to think about loads before the visit.

Your approval path

Move in without a plan and your first hurricane season may start with a tank you cannot legally place or a generator too small for the AC.

  1. District 16 developer ARC

Long Prairie is in District 16, created February 24, 2025, under the District 13 to 16 developer manual. A permanently affixed generator needs an application and a rear or side spot not visible from the street.

  2. Lot, easement and exhaust rules

The unit must be sized to the lot, kept out of villa and veranda easements and setbacks, screened by a fence no taller than the unit, with exhaust away from neighbors.

  3. Tank by home type

Designer, premier and cottage homes and the Wallace patio villas need a buried tank. Long Prairie Verandas, Sara courtyard villas and Cottage Villas may use one above-ground tank up to 120 gallons. Bungalow and garden villa owners ask the ARC.

  4. Permit and inspection

Sumter County Building Services issues permits for the City of Wildwood, then inspects the finished work.

Long Prairie is home to Mustang Recreation, the horse-themed village center with a family pool, officially in The Village of Long Prairie at 7956 Busche Blvd. Long Prairie Recreation, the neighborhood adult pool, is at 7910 Busche Blvd. The village is set amid the Beautyberry and Honeysuckle Executive courses, and The Villages describes scenic fairways, natural water features and wide open landscapes. Olympia Recreation is the regional complex, and Pullman Recreation is upcoming.

Daily life here centers on those places. After a storm, plan as if none of them will be open. A recreation center is not a shelter; Sumter County's special needs shelter is at the Gloria Rowe Hayward complex in Sumterville.

What keeps a Long Prairie home running is at the home itself:

  • Power. A standby generator with an automatic transfer switch, sized for cooling, the refrigerator and any medical device.
  • Water. Districts 15 and 16 are served by Gibson Place Utilities, a privately owned system. If the District posts a precautionary boil water notice, you boil for one minute, and clearing usually takes about two days.
  • Supplies. Florida's disaster checklist plans for at least 7 days of food and one gallon of water per person per day.

Without power, the FDA gives a closed refrigerator about 4 hours and a full freezer about 48. A running generator turns that clock off. See the hurricane backup power guide.

Plan a Long Prairie home that keeps running after the storm.

A first-season outage plan for a new Long Prairie owner

Nobody in Long Prairie has a storm history here yet, so borrow the county's. After Milton in 2024, Sumter County outages reached zero about four days after the peak. Irma's 2017 county peak was 38.9% of accounts, and statewide outages took about ten days to fall below 1%. Longer cases happened elsewhere, such as about 26 days after Michael in the Panhandle. Plan for the long case without expecting it.

  1. Right-size the unit. A Goodman 3 ton compressor runs near 3.2 kVA but needs about 20 kVA to start, so load management that staggers starts can let a smaller generator work.
  2. Know your burn. A 26 kW Generac burns about 2.06 gallons of propane an hour at half load and 3.63 at full load, about 87 gallons a day. Keeping the house near half load nearly doubles your days.
  3. Book refills before June. During Irma, propane reached Florida only by truck for about seven days, and the state put backup generators on its priority list.
  4. Stock the oil shelf. Generac asks for a 30 minute shutdown every 24 hours to check oil and a change every 100 hours above 85 F. A three-week outage is about 494 run hours, roughly five changes of about 1.9 quarts of 5W-20.

Cost is the last piece. PowerOutage.us puts a typical Florida whole-home install at about $7,000 to $15,000; your installer's written quote is the real number. See the cost guide.

Does a Long Prairie bungalow villa need a buried propane tank?

The District 13 to 16 developer manual names homes, cottage homes and patio villas as needing buried tanks, and courtyard villas, verandas and cottage villas as allowed one above-ground tank up to 120 gallons. It does not name bungalow villas or garden villas in that list, so the developer ARC confirms which rule covers yours before you order a tank.

Can a Long Prairie Veranda use an above-ground propane tank?

Yes. Under the current developer manual, verandas may use a buried tank or one above-ground tank of no more than 120 gallons, out of sight from the road and neighbors and outside easements. Filled to about 80%, that tank runs a Generac 26 kW about 47 hours at half load. Your installer confirms the spot.

Is Long Prairie under different ARC rules than older villages?

Yes. Long Prairie is in District 16, which uses the developer-administered manual for Districts 13 to 16. It asks for a rear or side spot out of street view, a size consistent with the lot, no placement in easements or setbacks, and exhaust away from neighbors. Unlike the older district manuals, it states no 2 foot property-line distance.

How long would the power stay out in Long Prairie after a hurricane?

No one can say ahead of time. Long Prairie homes are too new for a local record, but after Milton in 2024 Sumter County outages reached zero about four days after the peak. Irma's statewide outages took about ten days to fall below 1%. A sound plan covers several days on stored fuel plus a refill.

Who permits a generator in Long Prairie?

Long Prairie is in the City of Wildwood, which outsources building permits to Sumter County Building Services. Developer ARC approval comes first, then the county permit. The county's gas permit form covers tank size, piping, appliance BTUs and a site plan. Your installer files and schedules the inspection.
