Home generators in the Village of Bonnybrook

Bonnybrook is home to Pimlico Recreation and some of the earliest villas in District 5. A licensed local installer can tell you what it takes to keep your home, and any medical equipment, running through a long outage.

Bonnybrook sits south of CR 466 along Belvedere Boulevard, east of Belvedere, north of Ashland and west of Winifred. Listings call it minutes from Lake Sumter Landing and the CR 466 shops, and it is one of the District 5 villages closest to them. The village is home to Pimlico Recreation at 530 Belvedere Boulevard, the horse-racing-themed village center with a family pool, 8 pickleball courts and rooms named for Triple Crown tracks, and to Pimlico executive golf next door. Bonnybrook Recreation, a neighborhood adult pool, sits at 675 Belvedere Boulevard.

Being close to everything is a comfort in normal times. In a storm, though, the shops and centers share the same grid as your street, and fuel and supplies can run short right after a hurricane. During Irma, GasBuddy data showed about 43% of Florida gas stations out of fuel on Sept. 12, 2017. A short drive does not help if the pumps are dry or the store has no power.

That is the real argument for a home that keeps running by itself. With a standby generator, the freezer holds, the air conditioning stays on, and you do not need to drive anywhere the first week. The hurricane backup guide lays out what to do before a storm is named.

Set up backup power before the next storm season.

Fuel on Belvedere Boulevard: check for gas before buying propane

TECO Peoples Gas is the main natural gas utility in The Villages. Its 2018 filing with the Florida PSC put its Sumter County customers at about 19,387, most of them in Villages communities, but coverage by village was never mapped publicly. So the first step in Bonnybrook is to ask whether a gas main serves your lot. Your installer can tell from the meter, and Peoples Gas asks to be told about new standby units so the meter and regulator can be checked.

Natural gas has a strong storm record here. In a May 2025 release, Peoples Gas said fewer than 1% of its more than 500,000 customers had a gas service interruption in the 2024 storms. That is the company's own figure, and gas is not immune upstream: during Winter Storm Uri in Texas, FERC and NERC found gas supply problems in 87% of the fuel-related power plant failures. Florida is not Texas, but no fuel is magic.

Without gas, it is propane. The District 5 manual allows an underground tank or one above-ground tank of up to 120 gallons, out of view and out of easements. At 80% fill that is about 96 gallons, roughly 47 hours for a Generac 26 kW at half load. A buried tank holds more if the lot allows the NFPA 58 setbacks. The gas versus propane guide compares them side by side.

Ask your installer to confirm gas service at your lot.

Your approval path

If you depend on oxygen or refrigerated medicine, an outage that outlasts a concentrator battery or a refrigerator's cold becomes a medical problem, not an inconvenience.

  1. Apply to the District 5 ARC

File an Architectural Review application for the permanently affixed generator, with a site plan of property lines, easements and the pad, before any work starts.

  2. Meet the placement rules

Rear or side yard, at least 2 ft from property lines, not visible from Belvedere Boulevard or any street, exhaust away from neighbors, screening no taller than the unit.

  3. Permits from Sumter County

Your installer applies to Sumter County Building Services for the electrical permit and any gas permit after ARC approval, and confirms the office for your address.

  4. Install and final inspection

The pad, transfer switch, fuel connection and unit go in, the county inspects, and the installer shows you the controller and oil check.

Broyhill Villas, Live Oak homes and the pie-shaped lots

Bonnybrook dates to 2003. The Broyhill Villas declaration of restrictions is dated May 2, 2003, the earliest District 5 villa declaration found, and a Broyhill Colony patio villa carries a 2003 MLS year built. Other listings run from 2004 to 2006, including designer and custom single-family homes such as a Live Oak model. The 2003 Broyhill listing shows frame with vinyl siding and a shingle roof; the 2004 Live Oak home also has a shingle roof.

Lots range from small villa sites to about a quarter acre, and one listing reports water views from a large pie-shaped lot. Each shape asks something different of a generator:

  • Broyhill patio villas have little side yard, so a compact unit and an exact site plan come first.
  • Quarter-acre homes usually fit a side-yard pad with room for screening shrubs.
  • Pie-shaped lots are narrow at the street and wide at the back, which can make a rear corner the easiest spot to keep out of view.

A homeowner who has lived in a 2003 villa for twenty years also tends to know the panel's quirks. Mention any past electrical work to your installer, since an older panel may need attention before a transfer switch goes in. The transfer switch guide explains what that piece does.

Oxygen, insulin and heat in a Bonnybrook home

The October 2026 HHS emPOWER data counts 2,478 Medicare beneficiaries in Sumter County who rely on power-dependent equipment, and 577 who receive oxygen services. In a village like Bonnybrook, built for people who plan to stay, that is a planning fact, not a statistic.

Three things are worth knowing before the next storm:

  • Utility programs have limits. SECO Energy's Medically Necessary Service flags an account for crews only when named-storm restoration is not in effect; during a storm, shelters, hospitals and government facilities come first.
  • Batteries are short. A CDC paper found most oxygen concentrators run about 3 to 4 hours on battery at the lowest settings. A home unit such as the Philips EverFlo draws about 350 watts, easy for any standby generator.
  • Heat is the quiet risk. CDC says adults 65 and older should stay in air-conditioned space in very hot weather and not rely on a fan. FDA says insulin can stay unrefrigerated between 59 F and 86 F for up to 28 days.

Sumter County's special needs registry is run by the Florida Department of Health and is worth joining, but it does not guarantee a shelter space. A generator keeps you home and comfortable. See the medical backup guide.

Ask for a setup that keeps medical equipment powered.

Does natural gas reach the homes in Bonnybrook?

Some Villages homes have Peoples Gas service and some do not, and no public map shows coverage village by village. The quickest check is whether your home has a gas meter, or a line to a gas range or water heater. Your installer confirms it on the first visit, and Peoples Gas asks that a technician check the meter and regulator size for any new standby generator.

Will a standby generator run my oxygen concentrator in Bonnybrook?

Yes, as long as the concentrator's circuit is on the generator. A home unit like the Philips EverFlo draws about 350 watts, a small share of any whole-home generator. Tell your installer about every medical device so those circuits are wired first, and keep the concentrator's own battery charged for the few seconds the transfer switch needs to start the unit.

Does SECO give medical households priority after a hurricane?

Not during named-storm restoration. SECO Energy's Medically Necessary Service flags an account for crews only when emergency storm restoration is not in effect. During a named storm, shelters, hospitals and government facilities come first. SECO also says it cannot guarantee uninterrupted power and suggests a backup generator, evacuating, or a county shelter. If Duke Energy Florida serves you, ask Duke about its program.

Can my Broyhill villa have a generator under the District 5 rules?

The District 5 manual covers homes, courtyard villas and patio villas alike. A fixed generator goes in the rear or side yard, at least 2 ft from property lines, out of view from the street, with exhaust away from neighbors. Villa lots are tight, so the answer depends on your exact lot lines and easements, which your installer measures before the ARC application goes in.

How long does a Bonnybrook install take from estimate to power?

The steps run in order: the estimate, the District 5 ARC review, Sumter County permits, the install itself and the final inspection. ARC approval is valid for 9 months, so there is time to schedule. The surest way to be ready for hurricane season is to start in the winter or early spring, before storm forecasts send everyone to the phone at once.
