Bridgeport at Lake Miona lies between CR 466 and CR 466A on the north and northeast shore of Lake Miona, with Lake Miona Drive and Black Lake Drive running through it. A listing calls it an all-premier neighborhood, and its lots, about 0.29 to 0.37 acre, are the largest found in the district. Homes date from 2004 to 2006 by MLS year built, including Sanibel and Natchez premier models on Hartford Path. The listings show shingle roofs; wall construction was not stated, so your installer confirms it.

Big homes change the sizing math. A premier home can have two air handlers, a pool and spa, an electric range and a long run from the panel to any side yard. Covering all of that at once takes a larger unit. Covering the essentials, with the second air system and the pool on load management, can use a smaller one. Generac's Smart Management Modules shed big loads at startup, and its 26 kW transfer switch can manage up to four air conditioning loads with no added hardware.

The large lots help with placement. There is usually room for a side-yard pad that is well over 2 ft from the line, out of view from the street, with space for shrubs as screening. Many lots face the golf course, which keeps the rear yard open but visible. The sizing guide shows how an installer builds the load list.

Running a premier home for a week: loads, oil and refills

The Florida Division of Emergency Management plans for at least 7 days, and for a large home that week depends on three numbers.

  • Fuel burn. A Generac 26 kW uses 2.06 gallons of propane an hour at half load and 3.63 at full load, about 87 gallons a day flat out. On natural gas, the same unit draws 188 cubic feet an hour at half load and 333 at full load.
  • Tank size. A 500 gallon buried tank holds about 400 gallons at 80% fill, about 194 hours or 8.1 days at half load. A 250 gallon tank gives about 97 hours. An above-ground tank is limited to 120 gallons in District 5, about 47 hours.
  • Oil. Generac asks for a 24-hour shutdown check and an oil change every 100 hours in continuous running above 85 F. A three-week outage is about 494 run hours, roughly 5 oil changes. Kohler's 26 kW asks for an oil check every 24 hours and a change every 150 hours.

A big home rarely needs full load all day. Running one air system, the kitchen and the lights keeps the unit near half load, about 2.06 gallons an hour instead of 3.63. Keep a filter and a few quarts of oil on the shelf before the season starts. The fuel runtime page has the full table.

Ask for a written seven-day fuel plan for your home.

Your approval path

A large home without backup loses its air conditioning, refrigeration and pool equipment all at once, and a long outage turns that into spoiled food and a house you would rather leave.

  1. District 5 ARC review

The permanently affixed generator needs an Architectural Review application with a site plan of your lot, property lines, easements and pad. Approval comes before any work.

  2. Placement on a premier lot

Rear or side yard, at least 2 ft from property lines, out of view from Lake Miona Drive, Black Lake Drive or any street, exhaust away from neighbors, screening no taller than the unit.

  3. Sumter County permits

Your installer applies to Sumter County Building Services for the electrical permit and a gas permit for the fuel line, and confirms the office for your address.

  4. Install and inspection

The crew sets the pad, transfer switch and unit, connects fuel, and the county inspects before the installer runs a full-load test.

Palmer Legends Country Club, the 27-hole championship course designed with Arnold Palmer, is in the village, with its clubhouse on Palmer Way. The official course page says some holes run beside a large prairie nature preserve and others overlook Lake Sumter and Lake Sumter Landing. Lake Miona and Black Lake are close, and Bridgeport Recreation, the lighthouse-themed village center with a family pool and tennis, sits at 1670 Lake Miona Drive.

Open water and open fairways shape a generator plan in a few ways. A golf-front lot is visible from the course, so the rear yard is not hidden just because it faces away from the street; a side-yard spot with low screening often reads best in the ARC review. Lots near the water also deserve a look at drainage, so your installer checks where rain runs and how high the pad should sit before marking the spot.

Sound carries over water and fairways too. The District 5 manual sets no decibel limit, but it does ask that the exhaust point away from neighbors. Facing the exhaust toward open lawn and setting the weekly exercise for midday keeps the peace. The noise page covers quieter models.

Have your installer pick a pad spot that suits your lot.

Gas or a buried tank on Hartford Path and Lake Miona Drive

For a premier home, natural gas is the simplest path to a long outage, because there is nothing to refill. TECO Peoples Gas is the main gas utility in The Villages, but which streets have mains has never been mapped publicly, so your installer checks for a meter at your home. A 26 kW unit at full load draws 333 cubic feet an hour on top of your other gas appliances, and Peoples Gas asks to be told about new standby units so the meter and regulator can be checked for size.

If there is no gas, a buried propane tank is the next best answer, and lots this size are more likely to have room for one. The District 5 manual allows underground tanks and names no size for them. NFPA 58 setbacks keep an underground tank about 10 ft from the building and from a buildable property line, and easements can rule out spots too. A 500 gallon tank, about 400 gallons usable, gives about 8.1 days at half load. The manual limits an above-ground tank to one of 120 gallons, out of view and out of easements.

Two cautions. Propane has to be delivered, and during Irma trucks were the only way to bring it into Florida for about seven days. Order a top-off when a storm is forecast, not after. The natural gas in The Villages page explains the gas side.

Is Bridgeport at Lake Miona the same as Bridgeport at Miona Shores?

No. They are separate villages. Bridgeport at Lake Miona is in District 5, with premier homes from 2004 to 2006 around Palmer Legends. Bridgeport at Miona Shores is in District 6, with premier homes from about 2008 to 2009 on Miona Shores Drive. The ARC rules for generators read the same in both manuals, but your application goes to your own district.

What size generator does a premier home here need?

It depends on the panel, the number of air systems and what you want running. The examples on this site use 22 to 26 kW units, and a large home may need the top of that range to run everything at once. Load management can shed the second air system or the pool at startup, which can allow a smaller unit. A load calculation at your home decides it.

Can I bury a 500 gallon propane tank on my lot?

Possibly. The District 5 manual allows underground tanks and states no size for them. NFPA 58 setbacks keep a buried tank about 10 ft from the building and from a buildable property line, and utility easements also limit where it can go. Lots of 0.29 to 0.37 acre often have the room, but the installer and propane supplier confirm it for your address.

How long will my generator run on natural gas?

As long as the gas keeps flowing and the engine gets its oil breaks. Generac asks for a shutdown every 24 hours to check oil and a change every 100 hours in continuous running above 85 F. Peoples Gas says fewer than 1% of its customers lost gas service in the 2024 storms, a company figure. Supply problems have happened elsewhere, such as Texas during Uri.

Does the Palmer Legends course affect where my generator can go?

The course itself does not set rules, but the District 5 manual does: rear or side yard, at least 2 ft from property lines, not visible from the street, exhaust away from neighbors, and screening no taller than the unit. A golf-front rear yard is often in plain view of the course, so your installer may suggest a side yard and show the screening in the ARC application.
