Home generators in the Village of McClure

McClure's homes, built in 2018 and 2019, wrap around the Loblolly and Longleaf executive courses and their ponds. Here is how a standby generator fits a golf or pond lot and how long it can carry you.

McClure is built around golf. The Loblolly Executive (9 holes, par 27, 2197 Fenney Way) and the Longleaf Executive (9 holes, par 28, 2217 Fenney Way) are both officially in the Village of McClure, and Loblolly is described as the 40th executive course in The Villages. It runs through the neighborhoods. A designer home at 2140 Biller Circle is pond waterfront, and lots checked ran about 0.10 to 0.15 acres.

A golf or pond lot changes the placement puzzle:

  • The view goes out back. The rear yard faces the fairway or the water, so the street rule is easy there, but the unit is in plain sight from the course. Fence screening is allowed if it is no taller than the generator.
  • The side yard is short. On a 0.10 acre lot, 2 feet from the line plus the manufacturer clearances Generac cites from NFPA 37 (5 feet from operable windows and doors, 3 feet at the front and ends) leaves little room.
  • Neighbors are close. Exhaust must point away from neighboring homes under the District 12 manual.

The manual sets no decibel limit. Most standby units run a short weekly or every-other-week exercise, which you can schedule for a quiet hour. Our noise guide explains what to expect.

Gas lines are common in McClure listings: what that means for runtime

Several McClure listings show natural gas connected, gas cooking or gas water heaters. That is good news for a long outage. A generator on natural gas draws from the main instead of a tank. The Generac 26 kW spec sheet lists about 188 cubic feet an hour at half load and 333 at full load, and the unit keeps going as long as gas flows and the engine gets its oil checks.

Two cautions keep the plan honest:

  • The meter has a limit. Your range and water heater already use part of it. The installer adds up every gas appliance plus the generator and asks the utility for a larger meter if needed.
  • Gas systems can be hurt too. Peoples Gas said about 1,400 of its customers lost service through Helene and Milton, mostly from building damage. In Texas in 2021, the FERC-NERC report found gas supply problems behind many power plant failures during extreme cold. Florida hurricanes are a different kind of event, but no fuel is perfect.

If your home has no gas service, propane is allowed. One above-ground tank of no more than 120 gallons holds about 96 usable gallons, about 47 hours at half load on a 26 kW unit. At full load the same unit burns 3.63 gallons an hour, about 87 gallons a day. See generator fuel and runtime.

Your approval path

Skip the plan and a pond-front McClure home can sit hot and dark for days, with a full refrigerator turning into a cleanup job.

  1. District 12 ARC application

Before work, apply to the District 12 ARC for a permanently affixed generator. Rear or side yard, 2 feet off all property lines, not visible from the street, fence screening no taller than the unit, exhaust away from neighboring homes. The site plan shows lines and easements; approvals stay valid 9 months, with one extension.

  2. Sumter County permit

McClure is in the City of Wildwood, whose permits are issued by Sumter County Building Services. Your installer files after ARC approval.

  3. Install

A pad no larger than necessary, the generator, the automatic transfer switch and the gas connection go in.

  4. Inspection

County inspectors check the electrical and gas work, then the installer commissions the unit and sets its exercise day.

Most local outages have been short. After Milton, Sumter County went from 21,912 accounts out on October 10, 2024 to zero by the evening of October 14, per Florida PSC reports. Elsewhere, Michael left some Panhandle counties out for weeks. If you plan for three weeks, a short outage is easy.

Here is what three weeks asks of a standby generator:

  • Oil. Generac's owner manual calls for an oil change every 100 hours when running continuously above 85 F, and its continuous-use guidance asks for a 30 minute shutdown every 24 hours to check oil. Three weeks is about 494 run hours, roughly five changes of about 1.9 quarts each on a 20 to 26 kW unit.
  • Loads. The 26 kW Generac transfer switch can manage up to four air conditioning loads, and Smart Management Modules can shed other big loads so the unit is not oversized.
  • Supplies. Florida's disaster checklist plans for at least 7 days of food and water. After Irma, about 43% of Florida gas stations were out of fuel on September 12, 2017, so do not count on a quick run for anything.

Keep a shelf with oil, filters and a funnel, and write the shutdown time on the calendar. Our long-outage maintenance guide has the full list.

District 12 generator rules, read for a McClure golf lot

The District 12 ARC manual covers McClure. Its generator rules are short. In plain words:

  • When you need approval. Only for a generator permanently affixed to the home and lot. A portable unit needs no ARC application.
  • Where it goes. The rear or side of the home site, at least 2 feet from all property lines, and not visible from the street.
  • How to hide it. A fence may screen it but may be no taller than the generator. Landscaping can help too.
  • Which way it breathes. Exhaust points away from neighboring properties.
  • The pad. Concrete pads for generators, A/C units and pool equipment are kept no larger than necessary and 2 feet from property lines.
  • Propane. Above-ground tanks need approval: one tank, no more than 120 gallons, not visible from the road or neighbors, not in any easement. Underground tanks are also permitted.

The application needs a site plan showing property lines, easements and the work. Approval is valid for 9 months, with one extension of up to 9 more. The building permit is a separate step through Sumter County Building Services, which issues permits for the City of Wildwood. The manual says nothing about noise levels.

A golf lot sometimes carries extra easements along the course. Your installer checks the plat for them before picking a spot. More in our ARC approval guide.

Can my generator sit on the golf side of my McClure home?

Often, yes. The District 12 manual asks for the rear or side yard, 2 feet off property lines and out of view from the street, and a rear yard on the Loblolly or Longleaf course usually meets that. Golfers will still see it, so plan fence or plant screening no taller than the unit, and point the exhaust away from the homes beside you.

Will my gas range and water heater limit a generator in McClure?

They might. A gas meter is sized for the appliances on it, and a whole-home generator adds a large load. Your installer adds up every gas appliance plus the generator's full-load use, about 333 cubic feet an hour for a Generac 26 kW, and arranges a meter upgrade with the gas utility if needed.

How often does a generator need oil during a long summer outage?

Generac asks owners to stop the unit for at least 30 minutes after every 24 hours of running to check and top off oil. When it runs continuously above 85 F, it calls for an oil and filter change every 100 hours. A three-week outage is about 494 run hours, so plan on roughly five changes.

Does District 12 limit generator noise in McClure?

The District 12 manual sets no decibel limit and does not mention noise. It does require the exhaust to point away from neighbors and the unit to sit in the rear or side yard. You can set the weekly or every-other-week exercise for a quiet time of day, which neighbors on a golf street tend to appreciate.

What does a whole-home generator cost in McClure?

PowerOutage.us puts a typical Florida whole-home install at about $7,000 to $15,000, but that is a range, not a quote. Unit size, gas meter work, the transfer switch and the distance from the panel all move the price. A free in-home estimate gives you a written number for your McClure home.
