Home generators in the Village of Amelia
Amelia is one of the younger villages near Lake Sumter Landing, with designer homes, cottages and courtyard villas built from 2007 to 2009. A licensed local installer can plan backup power for the way your household lives.

Amelia lies between CR 466 and CR 466A, just east and southeast of Lake Sumter Landing, with golf-cart access to Lake Sumter Landing and Brownwood Paddock Square. Listings date it to 2007 through 2009, the youngest of the eastern District 6 villages. The homes are a real mix: designer homes such as the Gardenia and Amarillo, Cottage homes like the About Time Cottage on Arbella Loop, and courtyard villas in Audrey Villas, including the Beauregard model.
Construction is mixed too, frame with vinyl siding on Banberry Run, Harston Trail and Kerwood Loop and block and stucco on Dipper Loop. Homes here have shingle roofs, and several noted roofs replaced between 2022 and 2026. For many owners, that means the house is moving into its second round of upgrades, a natural time to add backup power.
Each home type asks something different:
- Designer homes usually have side-yard room and may want the whole house covered.
- Cottages sit on smaller lots, where a compact unit is easier to place 2 ft off the lines.
- Audrey Villas courtyard villas face the District 6 rule against vertical structures in rear and side easements, so placement comes first.
An installer can also check the panel age and space before choosing a transfer switch. The transfer switch page explains the options.
Heat and medical continuity for Amelia households
Sumter County has 2,478 Medicare beneficiaries who rely on power-dependent equipment, including 577 on oxygen services, by the October 2026 HHS emPOWER data. For many Amelia households, those needs shape the backup plan more than comfort does.
What the official sources say:
- Cooling. CDC says adults 65 and older are more prone to heat illness and should stay in air-conditioned space in very hot weather, not rely on a fan. NWS lists a body temperature above 103 F and confusion among heat stroke signs; call 911.
- Medicine. FDA says insulin can stay out of the refrigerator between 59 F and 86 F for up to 28 days. Ready.gov says to discard refrigerated medicine after an outage of more than a day unless the label says otherwise.
- Utility help. SECO Energy's Medically Necessary Service does not give priority during named-storm restoration, and SECO cannot guarantee uninterrupted power.
- The registry. Sumter County's special needs registry is run by the Florida Department of Health. It does not guarantee a shelter space, and registrants are told to plan to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours.
A standby generator wired to the air handler, the refrigerator and the medical outlets keeps you home and on schedule. The medical backup guide has a device list to bring to your estimate.
Your approval path
Four days without air conditioning in a Florida October is hard on anyone, and harder on a household managing heart, lung or diabetes care.
District 6 ARC application
Amelia follows the District 6 manual (revised 9/9/26). A permanently affixed generator needs an Architectural Review application with a site plan of lot lines, easements and the pad.
Placement under the manual
Rear or side yard, at least 2 ft from property lines, not visible from Odell Circle or any street, exhaust away from neighbors, fencing no taller than the unit, pad no larger than needed.
Sumter County permits
After approval, your installer applies to Sumter County Building Services for the electrical permit and any gas or propane permit, and confirms the office for your address.
Install and inspection
Pad, transfer switch, fuel line and generator go in; the county inspects; the installer tests and walks you through it.

Fuel for an Amelia home between Mallory Hill and Havana
Free in-home estimate, written price, no obligation.
Get my estimateAmelia's fuel question starts at your own meter. Check whether your home has a Peoples Gas meter or a gas range, water heater or furnace. TECO Peoples Gas is the main natural gas utility in The Villages, but coverage village by village has not been mapped, so your installer confirms it.
With gas, the generator draws from the main. A Generac 26 kW uses 188 cubic feet an hour at half load and 333 at full load, and Peoples Gas asks to be told about new standby units so it can check the meter and regulator. Its May 2025 release says fewer than 1% of its customers had a gas interruption in the 2024 storms.
Without gas, the District 6 manual allows an underground propane tank or one above-ground tank of no more than 120 gallons, out of view of the road and neighbors and out of easements. The numbers, using the Generac 26 kW at half load:
- 120 gallons above ground: about 96 usable, about 47 hours.
- 250 gallons buried: about 200 usable, about 4.0 days.
- 500 gallons buried: about 400 usable, about 8.1 days.
Buried tanks need about 10 ft from the building and buildable property lines under NFPA 58. The propane limits page has the details.
Odell Circle, Amelia Recreation and the days after a storm
Amelia Recreation, the neighborhood area, is at 1970 Odell Circle, and Odell Recreation, the village center, is at 2260 Odell Circle. SeaBreeze and Lake Miona regional centers are nearby. Listings place Amelia between two country clubs: Mallory Hill, with its 27 holes in the Amelia, Caroline and Virginia nines at 1675 O'Dell Circle, and Havana, another 27-hole championship course at 2488 O'Dell Circle in the Village of Hemingway. Some Amelia homes face the Amelia nine, and 2001 Dipper Loop overlooks a pond and Mallory Hill golf. Several listings note no homes directly behind.
Golf and pond frontage are a pleasure most days. In the days after a storm, the question is simpler: does your house work? Florida's emergency checklist plans for at least 7 days of food and water. A home with a generator keeps that week ordinary. The freezer stays frozen, the air conditioning runs, and phones and the internet modem stay charged.
Placement on these lots follows the District 6 manual: rear or side yard, at least 2 ft from property lines, out of view from the street, exhaust away from neighbors. With no homes directly behind on some lots, the exhaust can often face open water or fairway. The manual sets no noise limit, but a quieter model and a midday exercise schedule keep the neighbors happy. The noise page compares options.

Get my estimateCan my Audrey Villas courtyard villa have a generator?
Possibly. The District 6 manual's courtyard villa rules bar any vertical structure in the rear easements and in the dominant or servient side easements, and a generator must sit in the rear or side yard at least 2 ft from property lines and out of view from the street. Some villa layouts leave room and some do not, so an installer reads your plat first.
Does Amelia follow the same ARC rules as District 5 villages?
Amelia is in District 6, which has its own manual, revised 9/9/26. Its generator rules read the same as District 5's: an application for permanently affixed units, rear or side yard, 2 ft from property lines, not visible from the street, exhaust away from neighbors, screening no taller than the unit. Propane allows underground tanks or one above-ground tank up to 120 gallons.
Will a generator keep my insulin and oxygen safe in a long outage?
Yes, if those circuits are on the generator. The refrigerator and the concentrator outlet should be wired first. FDA says insulin can stay unrefrigerated between 59 F and 86 F for up to 28 days, and a home concentrator such as the Philips EverFlo draws about 350 watts. FDA also advises checking device settings after power returns, since some reset.
How much does a whole-home generator cost for an Amelia home?
The PowerOutage.us cost guide puts a typical Florida whole-home install at about $7,000 to $15,000. Your price depends on the unit size, the transfer switch, the distance from the panel and fuel source, and whether a propane tank is needed. A licensed installer gives you a written estimate after seeing the home. Treat any number before that as a range, not a quote.
Is my Amelia generator permit from Sumter County?
Yes, in most cases. District 6 was created by Sumter County ordinance and Amelia is in unincorporated Sumter County, so permits normally come from Sumter County Building Services. ARC approval comes first. Then your installer pulls the electrical permit and any gas permit, which asks for tank size, pipe size and a site plan, and confirms the office for your address.
