Home generators in the Village of Winifred

Winifred is almost all 2004 designer homes, many on Palmer Legends with moss-draped oaks behind them. A licensed local installer can tell you which fuel reaches your lot and how long your home can run on it.

For a designer home, fuel decides how long backup power lasts, so it is the first question in Winifred. TECO Peoples Gas is the main gas utility in The Villages; its 2018 PSC filing put its Sumter County customers at about 19,387, most in Villages communities. What nobody has published is a map of which villages have mains, so your installer checks your home for a meter.

If you have gas, a Generac 26 kW draws 188 cubic feet an hour at half load and 333 at full load, on top of your range and water heater. Before hookup, Peoples Gas wants to hear about the new standby unit so a technician can confirm the meter and regulator are big enough. In a May 2025 release, it said fewer than 1% of its more than 500,000 customers lost gas service in the 2024 storms. That is the utility's own figure, and gas can fail upstream: FERC and NERC traced 87% of Uri's fuel-related power plant failures in Texas to gas supply problems. Florida is a different climate, but it is fair to know.

Without gas, District 5 allows an underground tank or one above-ground tank of up to 120 gallons, about 96 gallons at 80% fill and roughly 1.9 days at half load. A buried 500 gallon tank gives about 8.1 days if the lot has room for the NFPA 58 setbacks. The natural gas page explains how to check service.

Ask your installer to check for gas at your meter.

Moss-draped oaks along the Laurel Valley nine

Winifred sits on the east side of the north half of District 5, south of CR 466, with Bonnybrook and Ashland to the west and Bridgeport at Lake Miona to the east. Winifred Way runs along Palmer Legends, and a listing says lots there overlook the first hole of the Laurel Valley nine, with large moss-draped oaks and a large preserve beyond. The official course page says Palmer Legends holes run beside a prairie nature preserve, and the golf-front homes are within walking distance of the Palmer clubhouse.

Big oaks are a reason people buy here, and a reason to place a generator with care:

  • Roots. A pad and a trenched fuel line both dig. The installer routes them to avoid cutting large roots.
  • Limbs. Vegetation was the largest outage cause in Irma, according to the Florida PSC. Keep the unit out from under heavy branches.
  • Moss and leaves. Debris collects on enclosures, and Generac asks owners to clear the louvers during long runs.

A golf-front back yard is open to the course, so the rear of the house is not out of sight even when it faces away from the street. The District 5 manual wants the unit hidden from the street and the exhaust pointed away from neighbors, so a side yard with low screening is often the best fit. See the noise and placement page.

Have a pad spot chosen around your oaks.

Your approval path

A designer home with no backup and no fuel plan faces the same choice every storm: ride out the heat or pack up and leave.

  1. Apply to the District 5 ARC

Send an Architectural Review application for the permanently affixed unit with a site plan of your lot lines, easements, the pad and the fuel route.

  2. Follow the placement rules

Rear or side of the home site, at least 2 ft from property lines, not visible from Winifred Way, Kingston Way or any street, exhaust away from neighbors, screening no taller than the unit.

  3. Sumter County permits

After approval, your installer applies to Sumter County Building Services for the electrical permit and the gas permit for the fuel line, and confirms the office for your address.

  4. Install and inspection

The pad, transfer switch, fuel line and generator are installed, the county inspects, and the installer tests under load.

2004 designer models: Whispering Oak, Camellia, Wisteria and more

Nearly every Winifred listing found was a designer home built in 2004: Whispering Oak, Camellia, Wisteria, Gardenia, Jasmine and Oleander models. Most are frame with vinyl siding and shingle roofs, one Whispering Oak is listed with metal siding, and one golf-front home on Winifred Way is listed as block. Several have rain gutters. Construction varies, so your installer checks your walls before planning where conduit and gas pipe pass through.

A twenty-plus-year-old designer home brings a few sizing questions:

  • The panel. Its size and spare space decide which transfer switch fits and whether the whole house can be covered.
  • Air conditioning. A replacement system may be larger or smaller than the original. A 3-ton compressor runs at about 3.2 kVA and starts near 20 kVA by its spec sheet arithmetic.
  • Extras. Pools, spas, second refrigerators and golf cart chargers add up. Load management can hold them back at startup.

The goal is a unit sized to the way you live, not the biggest one on the lot. A managed whole-home setup often gives the comfort of full coverage with a smaller generator and lower fuel use. Typical Florida installs run about $7,000 to $15,000 by the PowerOutage.us guide, and your written estimate gives the real number. The sizing guide walks through the math.

Keeping a Winifred home running through a long storm cleanup

A long outage in Winifred would most likely come from storm damage to lines, not a shortage of power plants. NERC's 2025 Long-Term Reliability Assessment rates the Florida Peninsula at a normal level of risk. The local record is about wind and trees: Milton put 23.0% of Sumter County accounts out at its peak, and the county was back to zero by Oct. 14, 2024. Ian kept parts of Lee County dark for about four weeks in 2022, a reminder that a hard hit can last much longer.

A Winifred plan for the long version:

  • Fuel first. On gas, nothing to order. On a 120 gallon above-ground tank, a Generac 26 kW at half load has about 47 hours, so call for propane on day one. During Irma, trucks were the only way to bring propane into Florida for about seven days.
  • Oil next. Generac asks for a 30-minute shutdown every 24 hours to check oil and a change every 100 hours in continuous running above 85 F. Three weeks is about 494 run hours, roughly 5 changes at about 1.9 quarts each.
  • Food and water. FDA says a full freezer holds about 48 hours without power. With a generator it does not have to.

Does natural gas reach the homes on Winifred Way?

Some Villages homes have Peoples Gas service and some do not, and no public map shows it by village. Look for a gas meter or a gas range or water heater, or ask your installer to check on the first visit. If you have gas, Peoples Gas asks that a technician check the meter and regulator size before a standby generator is connected.

Can my generator sit under the oaks behind my Winifred home?

It is better not to. Heavy limbs can fall in a storm, and the pad and fuel trench can damage large roots. The District 5 manual allows the rear or side yard at least 2 ft from property lines, hidden from the street, so your installer looks for a spot that is clear overhead and away from big roots.

How long will a Winifred home run on a 120 gallon propane tank?

Roughly 1.9 days, about 47 hours, if a Generac 26 kW runs at half load. A 120 gallon tank holds about 96 gallons at the 80% fill rule, and the spec sheet shows 2.06 gallons an hour at half load. Heavier loads burn faster. A buried 500 gallon tank gives about 8.1 days if your lot allows it.

Is natural gas always reliable for a generator?

It has a strong local record, but no fuel is guaranteed. By its own count, Peoples Gas had fewer than 1% of customers lose gas service in the 2024 storms. In Texas during Winter Storm Uri, FERC and NERC found gas supply problems behind 87% of fuel-related power plant failures. That happened in extreme cold elsewhere and is not a forecast for Florida.

Do I need ARC approval and a permit for a Winifred generator?

Yes, both. The District 5 manual requires an Architectural Review application for any permanently affixed generator, and approval comes before work starts. Then Sumter County Building Services issues the electrical permit and any gas permit. The manual notes building permits are the owner's separate responsibility. Your installer handles both filings and checks which permit office covers your lot.
