The first thing to know about an Ocala generator is that the mailing address does not tell you who signs the permit. Ocala ZIP codes run from 34470 through 34483, and they stretch well past city limits into Silver Springs Shores, Marion Oaks, On Top of the World and dozens of county subdivisions. The City of Ocala itself counted 63,591 residents at the 2020 Census.
- Inside city limits: the City of Ocala Growth Management Department's Building Division issues the permits.
- Outside city limits:Marion County Building Safety issues them. The county's permitting FAQ says electrical, gas, mechanical and plumbing work generally needs a permit, and work started before the permit can cost a penalty on top of the usual fee.
A generator job usually touches two of those trades: electrical for the transfer switch and panel, and gas for the fuel piping. Your installer looks up your parcel, files with the right office and books the inspections, so the job is never permitted in the wrong place.
In-town houses bring their own homework. The Ocala Historic District, about 172 acres east of the square, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, and its oldest homes along Fort King Street are Queen Anne houses built before 1910. Older panels, tight side yards and porches close to the property line all shape where the unit sits and what the switch connects to.
Ask your installer to confirm city or county for your parcel
Ocala Electric Utility and the utilities at the city edge
Ocala is one of the few places in Florida where the city owns the electric company. Ocala Electric Utility had about 56,000 customers in October 2024, mostly inside city limits. Step past the edge of town and the map changes: Duke Energy had about 78,907 Marion County customers that month, SECO Energy about 72,900, and Clay Electric Cooperative serves parts of north and northeast Marion under a territorial agreement with the city that the Florida Public Service Commission reviewed in 2019.
No utility here gets a pass. During Irma in 2017, about 35,000 Ocala Electric Utility customers went dark while Duke had 90% of its Marion customers out. When Helene came through in September 2024, 6,280 Ocala Electric Utility customers were among 41,778 out countywide. During Milton, 21.3% of the city utility's customers lost power, compared with about 24.9% on Duke and up to 28.9% of SECO's Marion members.
The generator works the same on all four. An automatic transfer switch separates your house from the grid, then hands the load to the generator within seconds, and your installer builds that connection to the standards of whichever utility is on your bill.
The Helene numbers show how differently one storm can land across one county. On the Friday morning after it passed, Duke had 24,797 Marion customers out, Clay Electric 9,096, Ocala Electric Utility 6,280 and SECO 1,592. Two weeks later Milton flipped the pattern and hit the city utility hard. You cannot pick your storm, and you cannot pick which feeder fails first.

Three steps to power
Without backup, the next long outage means a hot house in September, food and medicine on a countdown and a home office that stays closed until the lines are rebuilt.
Free estimate
A licensed installer checks your panel and your gas meter or propane spot, and confirms whether the City of Ocala or Marion County permits your parcel.
Install day
Once that office issues permits, the pad, generator, transfer switch and fuel line go in over one to two days.
Power on
The inspector signs off, the unit is started and load tested, and you learn the controls before anyone leaves.
Peoples Gas at the meter, or a tank in the yard

Get my estimateOcala has had piped gas for decades. Peoples Gas took over Ocala-area service in 1997 through the West Florida Natural Gas merger, and many older city streets and newer subdivisions have mains. Many is not all, so your installer checks your address.
If you already have a gas meter for a furnace, water heater or range, the generator can usually tap the same service and you never refuel. The catch is volume. A 22 kW air-cooled Generac burns roughly 281 cubic feet of natural gas an hour at full load, far more than a water heater, so the installer checks the meter size and pipe run before promising anything. A larger meter is a call to the gas company, not a dealbreaker.
No gas on your street? A buried or above-ground propane tank does the same job. The same 22 kW unit uses about 3.67 gallons an hour at full load, so tank size decides how many days you can run between deliveries. Our natural gas vs propane guide lays out the trade-offs.
Historic porches, SR 200 villas and barns on the edge of town
Ocala is not one kind of house. Downtown has the historic district. Southwest of town, State Road 200 is lined with active-adult communities: On Top of the World alone counted 12,668 residents at the 2020 Census with a median age of 72.5, and Stone Creek, Oak Run, Majestic Oaks and SummerGlen sit nearby. Northwest Ocala has Ocala Preserve and Ocala Palms.
Most of those communities sit outside city limits and add an architectural review step before the permit. Florida Statute 720.3035 lets an HOA set specifications for a fixed generator, but it cannot deny an application that meets them. Installers who work there prepare the packet with you.
Then there is horse country. Marion County has about 75,000 horses and more than 1,200 horse farms, many on the roads leaving Ocala. A barn with fans, waterers and a well needs a different size than a house; generators for horse farms covers it, and generators for retirees covers medical equipment and heat.
What an Ocala install costs and how long it takes
Typical Florida installs run about $7,000 to $15,000. The low end is a smaller home on the essentials with gas already at the meter. The high end is a larger house with two air handlers, a pool pump and a long fuel run. The whole-home generator cost guide shows what moves the number, and the sizing guide helps you see your likely kW range before anyone visits.
Most projects take four to eight weeks from signed estimate to power on, with one to two days of work at the house. Popular choices around Ocala include Generac and Kohler air-cooled units; your installer explains which fits your panel and fuel.
Your written estimate should name every piece, so you can compare it line by line: the generator and its kW rating, the concrete or composite pad, the automatic transfer switch and its amp rating, the gas or propane piping, the permits, the inspections and startup. If the gas meter needs an upgrade or the panel needs work, that should be on the page too, not a surprise on install day.
The four to eight weeks are mostly paperwork and equipment. Inside city limits the City of Ocala reviews the permit; outside, the county does. In a 55+ community the architectural review comes first. After a big storm, demand jumps and lead times can stretch, which is why many Ocala homeowners book the estimate in spring rather than in September.
The next storm, with the generator in place
Picture the next September outage. The lights blink, the house goes quiet, and within seconds the air handler starts again. The fridge keeps humming, the CPAP keeps running, and you hear about the outage from a neighbor instead of feeling it. If you are away, the generator does the same thing without you.
Getting there takes one request. You tell us your address and what matters most, and you are matched with a licensed installer who already works in Ocala, so you are not calling around. Expect a call back usually within one business day, then a free in-home visit and a written estimate. Book at /book or call (352) 780-1430.

Get my estimateMy mail says Ocala. Is the City of Ocala my permit office?
Only if your parcel sits inside city limits. Ocala ZIP codes 34470 through 34483 cover a lot of unincorporated Marion County, including On Top of the World, Marion Oaks and Silver Springs Shores. Inside the city, the City of Ocala Building Division issues the permits; outside it, Marion County Building Safety does. Your installer looks up the parcel and files with the correct office.
Does being on Ocala Electric Utility change the install?
The generator is the same. What changes is the paperwork and coordination at the meter and main panel. The automatic transfer switch isolates your home from the grid before the generator takes over, which protects line crews, and your installer builds it to the standards of the utility on your bill, whether that is Ocala Electric Utility, Duke Energy, SECO Energy or Clay Electric.
Will my existing gas meter run a whole-home generator?
Sometimes as is, sometimes after an upgrade. A 22 kW air-cooled unit can burn around 281 cubic feet of natural gas an hour at full load, much more than a water heater. Your installer checks the meter rating and the pipe run during the estimate. If the meter is too small, Peoples Gas may need to swap it, and the estimate will say so.
Can a generator go beside a historic downtown home?
Usually, with careful placement. Generac's guidance, based on NFPA 37, calls for 5 feet from windows, doors and vents and 3 feet of space at the front and ends, and local code can be stricter. On tight historic lots the installer looks at side and rear yards, the panel location and the gas line route before recommending a spot.
How soon will someone call me back?
Usually within one business day. One request matches you with a licensed installer who serves Ocala, so you are not repeating your story to several companies. The installer schedules a free in-home visit, then gives you a written estimate with the size, the transfer switch, the fuel connection and the total.
