Searches for the best whole house generator brands usually lead to a ranking. This page does not have one. Each of these four brands publishes spec sheets and manuals, and each has strengths that matter more or less depending on your home, your fuel and the installer who will service it.

For a household planning for long outages, the useful comparison is not the logo. It is four questions:

  1. How much fuel does it burn at the loads your home actually runs?
  2. How often does it need oil and checks during a long run?
  3. How does it handle big loads like your air conditioner?
  4. Who near you installs and services it, and keeps parts on hand?

The figures below come from each maker's own spec sheets and owner documents, checked on October 28, 2026. Where a maker publishes cubic feet but not gallons, we convert using the 36.39 cubic feet per gallon printed on the same sheet, and say so. Models change, so your installer confirms the current version.

A note on names. Kohler's generator business is part of Rehlko, the new name Kohler Energy announced on September 17, 2024, after it became a stand-alone company. You will see both names. Generac, Kohler, Rehlko, Briggs & Stratton and Cummins are trademarks of their owners. This site is not a dealer for any of them. One request matches you with an independent, Florida-licensed installer, who will tell you which brands they install and service.

The four brands compared here are the ones with published spec sheets on file for this site. Others exist, and an installer may suggest one.

Generac Guardian: 14 to 26 kW, air-cooled

Generac's air-cooled Guardian line spans the sizes most Villages homes consider. From Generac's spec sheets:

  • 14 kW (14 kW on propane and natural gas): 1.81 gallons of propane an hour at half load, 3.07 at full; 195 and 256 cubic feet of natural gas.
  • 18 kW (18 propane, 17 natural gas): 1.70 and 3.02 gallons an hour.
  • 22 kW (22 propane, 19.5 natural gas) and 24 kW (24 propane, 21 natural gas): 2.53 and 3.90 gallons an hour.
  • 26 kW (26 propane, 22.5 natural gas): 2.06 and 3.63 gallons an hour; 188 and 333 cubic feet of natural gas.

Generac publishes fuel at half and full load only. The 26 kW measures 67 dB(A) at 23 feet at normal load and 57 dB(A) in its low-speed Quiet-Test exercise.

For long runs. Generac's owner's manual sets the standard oil and filter change at every 2 years or 200 hours, but every 100 hours when running continuously above 85 F. Its continuous-use guidance asks for a shutdown of at least 30 minutes every 24 hours to check and top off oil, look for fuel leaks and clear the louvers. Oil capacity on the 20 to 26 kW units is about 1.9 quarts of 5W-20.

Big loads. The service-rated switch with the 26 kW unit manages up to four AC loads, and Smart Management Modules add up to eight more large loads.

Generac's exercise runs 5 minutes, weekly, every other week or monthly.

Kohler (Rehlko): 20RCA and 26RCA

Kohler publishes fuel use at four load points, which makes planning easier. From its spec sheets:

  • 20RCA (20 kW propane, 18 kW natural gas): natural gas 127, 161, 243 and 281 cubic feet an hour at 25, 50, 75 and 100% load. Propane works out to about 1.62, 2.25, 3.00 and 3.74 gallons an hour.
  • 26RCA (26 kW propane, 24 kW natural gas): natural gas 137, 180, 238 and 290 cubic feet an hour. Propane works out to about 1.76, 2.34, 3.05 and 3.54 gallons an hour.

The gallon figures are converted from Kohler's propane cubic feet using the 36.39 factor printed on the sheet. The 26RCA's natural gas rating, 24 kW, is close to its propane rating.

The 26RCA measures 56 dB(A) during exercise and 67 dB(A) during full-speed diagnostics and normal operation, at 23 feet.

For long runs. Kohler's service schedule (TP-7092) asks you to check oil every 24 hours of operation on the 26 kW model and every 8 hours on the 20 kW model. That 8-hour check is worth knowing before a long outage. Standard oil changes come yearly or every 150 hours. With premium 10W-50 extended-life synthetic on the 26 kW, the interval is 2 years or 300 hours. Capacity is about 2.0 quarts.

Big loads. A load shed kit or load management board handles up to six loads, including two independent AC loads.

Kohler offers a weekly 20-minute exercise with diagnostics and a 90-second Eco Exercise.

At 6 AM on October 10, 2024, after Hurricane Milton, SECO Energy reported 13.9% of its 75,252 Sumter County accounts without power, per the Florida PSC.

Briggs & Stratton PowerProtect: PP20 and PP26

Briggs & Stratton publishes fuel use at no load, half load and full load. That no-load figure is useful, because a generator idling through a quiet night still burns fuel. From the spec sheets, opened as dealer-hosted copies:

  • PowerProtect+ PP26 (26 kW propane, 24 kW natural gas): propane 1.4, 2.6 and 4.7 gallons an hour at no, half and full load; natural gas 122, 206 and 323 cubic feet an hour.
  • PowerProtect PP20 (20 kW on both fuels, on a 2021 sheet that may not reflect the current 20 kW model): propane 1.1, 2.3 and 3.7 gallons an hour; natural gas 99, 187 and 260 cubic feet.

The PP26 lists 62 dB(A) in low idle mode and 67 dB(A) at normal operation.

For long runs. Both sheets list an oil capacity of 78 ounces, about 2.31 liters, of 5W-30 full synthetic with one cartridge filter. Ask your installer for Briggs & Stratton's oil change and check intervals for extended operation in your unit's owner's manual, since they were not on the spec sheets reviewed.

Fuel pressure. Briggs lists 3.5 to 7 inches of water column on natural gas and 11 to 14 inches for propane vapor.

Exercise. The PP26's exercise is programmable from 16 seconds, the default, up to 20 minutes.

On full load, the PP26's propane burn is the highest of the 26 kW units on this page. At half load it is close to the others. That is one more reason load management matters on any brand.

Cummins Quiet Connect: RS20A

Cummins' residential RS20A is a 20 kW class unit, and its spec sheet publishes fuel at four load points like Kohler's. From Cummins' sheet:

  • Ratings: 20 kW on propane and 18 kW on natural gas, by its rated amps of 83.3 and 75 at 240 volts.
  • Natural gas: 135, 172, 223 and 268 cubic feet an hour at 25, 50, 75 and 100% load.
  • Propane: about 1.35, 1.81, 2.42 and 3.08 gallons an hour, converted from the sheet's cubic feet using its 36.39 factor.
  • Sound: 65 dB(A) at 23 feet at normal load, measured at the quietest point.

Big loads. This is where the RS20A stands out on paper. Cummins says it can control up to four loads, watching each and restoring only what the generator can run, and that it can start a 5-ton air conditioner under full pre-load. The sheet lists 40 kVA of motor starting at a 30% voltage dip. For a Villages home with a large AC, that is worth discussing with your installer.

On a 120-gallon tank. At its derived half-load burn of 1.81 gallons an hour, the 96 usable gallons in a 120-gallon tank would last about 53 hours. Remember that half load on a 20 kW unit is less power than half load on a 26 kW unit, so compare runtime at your home's actual load, not at a percentage.

Cummins' propane inlet range is 6 to 12 inches of water column, and natural gas 3.5 to 12.

Ask your installer about Cummins' long-run oil intervals from the owner's manual, which were not part of the spec sheet reviewed.

Comparing them for a three-week outage

Here is how the brands line up when you plan for the long one. A three-week outage is 504 hours. With Generac's 30-minute daily stop, the engine runs about 494 hours.

Oil. On a Generac 20 to 26 kW unit running continuously above 85 F, changes every 100 hours mean about five changes, roughly 9.5 quarts of oil and five filters. On a Kohler 26RCA at its standard 150-hour interval, it is about three changes and 6 quarts, plus air cleaner and spark plug service at 150 hours and replacement at 300. Kohler also asks for an oil check every 24 hours on the 26 kW. Whatever the brand, keep that oil and those filters on a shelf before June.

Propane runtime on bigger tanks, at half load, where a buried tank fits the lot. From the spec-sheet math:

  • 250 gallons: Generac 26 kW about 4.0 days, Kohler 26RCA about 3.6, Generac 22 or 24 kW about 3.3, Briggs PP26 about 3.2.
  • 500 gallons: Generac 26 kW about 8.1 days, Kohler 26RCA about 7.1, Generac 22 or 24 kW about 6.6, Briggs PP26 about 6.4.

The district ARC manuals cap an above-ground propane tank at 120 gallons, which gives a 26 kW Generac about 47 hours at half load. They allow a larger buried tank, but setbacks and easements rule one out on many small lots. On propane in The Villages, every brand needs a refill plan for a three-week outage. On natural gas, the limit is supply and maintenance, not the tank.

Service. For a long outage, the most important spec may be the phone number of someone nearby who works on your brand. Ask your installer who services it, whether they stock filters and plugs, and what a yearly visit includes. Our long-outage maintenance guide covers the routine.

What are the best whole house generator brands?

There is no single best brand. Generac, Kohler (Rehlko), Briggs & Stratton and Cummins all publish detailed spec sheets and make capable standby units. The right choice depends on your loads, your fuel, how the unit handles your air conditioner and who nearby installs and services it. A licensed installer can quote the brands they support for your home.

Which brand uses the least fuel?

It depends on the load and the size. At half load on propane, Generac lists 2.06 gallons an hour for its 26 kW, Kohler's 26RCA works out to about 2.34 and Briggs' PP26 lists 2.6. A smaller unit like the Cummins RS20A burns less but makes less power. Compare fuel at your home's actual load.

How often do these generators need oil during a long outage?

Generac calls for an oil change every 100 hours when running continuously above 85 F and a daily shutdown to check oil. Kohler's 26 kW asks for an oil check every 24 hours and a standard change every 150 hours, or 300 with premium oil. Ask your installer for your brand's extended-run schedule.

Is Kohler the same as Rehlko?

Kohler Energy announced its new corporate name, Rehlko, on September 17, 2024, after becoming a stand-alone company. Rehlko lists Home Energy among its businesses. You may see Kohler, Rehlko or both names on products and documents. The Kohler spec sheets and service schedule cited here are the versions published for the 20RCA and 26RCA, checked October 28, 2026.

How loud are these generators?

From the spec sheets, at 23 feet: Generac 26 kW about 67 dB(A) at normal load and 57 in its quiet exercise; Kohler 26RCA 67 at normal operation and 56 during exercise; Briggs PP26 67 normal and 62 at low idle; Cummins RS20A 65 at normal load. Placement and screening also change what neighbors hear.

Can I choose any brand in The Villages?

The district ARC rules checked for this site set placement, setback, screening and exhaust rules, not a brand. Every brand still needs an ARC application, a building permit and an inspection. In practice, choose a brand your installer installs and services locally, because service and parts matter most during a long outage.
